A Codex of Eternity can be used to transform a zone into a satanic zone. You can socket the codex with Orbs to enhance the satanic zone or even create a runeword that grants a powerful buff. The debuffs in the satanic zone are randomized when the codex is used. The specific zone affected and the duration of the satanic zone are predetermined at the time of the codex's drop and can be viewed in the tooltip.
